Happy Saint Valentine's Day 2012!

Okay – this is weird and I realize that I am probably spewing out literary gibberish, but it appears that Valentine’s day originally had nothing to do with anything even slightly romantic.  Early Christians honored the martyring of both Saint Valentine of Rome (AD 269) and Saint Valentine of Terni (post AD 197) on February 14th for centuries without a hint of romance until the musings of Chaucer brought about an association in the publishing of his poem, Parlement of Foules in 1382:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

[“For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”]

By 1797, printers began producing ready-made cards for lovers incapable of creating romantic writings of their own, and hence was born the long-lasting tradition of buying mass-produced musings of slave-labor authors incapable of landing better-paid gigs in the literary world for those of us whom don’t possess the skills or time (or inclination) to make a card of his or her own!  Yay!  Incidentally, in the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, Valentine’s day was removed from the General list of celebrated holidays as no one really remembered whom these Saints were or why they should be honored.

All commercialism aside, I wish each and every one of you the happiest Saint Valentine’s day ever.  Please do support us ill-rewarded writers by continuing to purchase mass-produced cards, but if you have the time it is always best to give your loved one something you created.  Even the worst rhyming and horribly worded poem will warm his or her heart – just try to avoid offending anyone by keeping your musings free of racism, criticism, or humor which may be misunderstood!

and, hallmark raised the bar on this date. making it a marketing strategy. there are many groups that boycot this day. but i don’t, i have made it mine like so many others have it is a day to tell someone you care about just how much they mean to you. a few flowers, candy hardly seems enough for a loved one. but, it is a beginning and say we all should do it. marketng strategy or not. so happy valentine’s day everyone. and especially you nikki, the big red heart should be you symbol, hvd baby girl

Thanks for your thoughts, Oscar!!! I agree with you completely. Even though I know I am being fleeced by the card companies I still love to celebrate. Also, restaurants seem to have really good deals on Valentine’s day!
