My Ill-Informed Thoughts on “Occupy Wall Street”

Reading and Posing

I will begin this blog by stating very clearly that I do not know enough about this topic to write anything intelligent, so please bear with me.  As I understand, the protesters whom have been holding peaceful demonstrations country-wide to express their disdain for corporate excess at the expense of the American people as well as disgust over the inept manner in which Congress has been handling our nation’s problems have been met with an excessive use of force by local police units sent in to disband the “illegal gatherings.”

Okay – I can accept that a large group of people occupying municipal property can be very disruptive to daily affairs, and that permits are a way of balancing events such as this with the normal activities of the city.  However, the immediate and excessive use of force used by police as I have seen on CNN and sources other than the site seem very much out of line, no matter what one’s opinion may be about the issues at hand.  If the protestors did not engage law enforcement authorities with violence, then the use of batons, tear gas, and pepper spray is not acceptable.  Again, however, I was not at any of these rallies and therefore am not privy to the details as they were on-scene.  What we read and hear is not always the truth, as you well know.

My main concern is that America is a very well-armed country.  The constitution provides us with the freedom of speech as well as the right to bear arms, and with these apparently peaceful protests being met with aggressive police tactics it is a matter of time before someone decides that the authorities whom are sworn to “serve and protect” no longer operate in the best interest of the people and may very well return the favor.  Of course, one can look at the atrocity of Kent State and conclude that the American people are not always so eager to violently oppose the government, but then again, sometimes very little reason can be given to turn a peaceful protest into a bloodbath.  Historically, it typically takes only one gunshot to start a war.

Lets not take the chance to see an America at war with itself.  We cannot afford to weaken our country any further.  I do not agree with the way business is conducted in our country as it provides other nations with too much power, I do not agree with the police for enforcing the law so violently that it may provide the people with a reason to strike back, and I do not agree with the protestors for using this particular method to convey their thoughts.  Hmmm…upon reading my own words it seems I need to choose a side, doesn’t it?

At this point I welcome some input on the issue.  Please feel free to write me and express your thoughts and opinions about “Occupy Wall Street.”  I’d love to learn more about how the American people feel, one person at a time!

First of all,,, DAMN that is a HOT picture of youy Nikki ! ! Secondly ,,, I think these people who are protesting want Wall Street to fall off the Earth ! But one must know,, I can say about 95 % of those who are protesting ,, that if you ask them ,, ” what solutions do You have other than Wall Street going down ? ” ,, I would say 95% of them would/will ,, have NO clue or Idea what they would want for a solution, or Ideas that they can come up with. Funny thing is,, seeing how 95% of those kids/people are skipping School, OR their Collage class, and are there Protesting ! I would say to those who ARE Skipping School OR Collage,,, : GET YOUR LAZZY ASS UP OFF THE GROUND ,, OR OFF THE STREET,, GET YOUR ASS BACK IN SCHOOL, OR COLLAGE, SO WHEN YOU GRADUATE,, JUST THINK DUMBASS ,,, YOUR FIELD OF STUDY/COURSE CAN LEAD YOU INT OMAKING AS MUCH AS THOSE ON WALL STREET, AND BE IN THAT SPOT IN A FEW YEARS YOU MORON ! ! ” In other words,,, they REALLY need to get a life ! ! Though of course,, BOTH “Liberal” Democrats ,, in which of course I am of course by FAR A Liberal,, OR a “Ditzy” Democrat ,,, due to I am a Conservative “Reagan” Republican ,, but I also think even some Republicans that also want to pas off the blame. When overall ,, NO one is to blame,, due to the fact most of these kids CAN be in the position to also earn that amount per year if only ,,,, THEY GET OFF THEIR ASS AND GET BACK TO SCHOOL TO GET/FINISH THEIR EDUCATION ! Though I do/would/will respect others opinion,, this is just my personal view point and my own personal opinion on what I have seen. ps ,,, great Blog Nikki ,, and a Huge thank you for bringing this subject/situation up.
pss ,,, DAMN I wish I was there when ya were having this picture taken :O ) HOAH ! ! lol

Thank you so very much for your thoughts, kw1970! One needs only to look back and examine similar situations in history when the foundation of a society was ripped out by an uprising only to discover that the very ground it tore asunder was far better than the replacement. Iran, Russia, Cuba, Cambodia, Roman Empire, and Yugoslavia are just a few examples. I am not saying, however, that the Shahs, Czars, or Batistas were any bargain – I would have revolted under said leadership, too! All I am suggesting is that a follow-up plan is a good idea for any movement. If the people whom are organizing Occupy Wall Street do not have a solution to their disdains, then more time needs to be spent on creating a replacement structure. I am not saying that this is the case, however! Maybe they do have a plan – I just haven’t heard of one yet.

Peaceful assembly, even in protest is protect by our governing tenets. However, it takes only a few with destructive agendas to change the environment to a ‘moblike’ posture. Unfortunately, such actions bring forth reactions by authorities to counter perceived unrest.
In my opinion, all these protests target the wrong parties. It was Congress that gave Wall Street and banks the powers they’ve handily abused. People that have lost everything including jobs, homes, even families resort to drastic measures.

Thank you for writing, Corvettedude! I very much appreciate your point-of-view on this subject. As we all know, I have a rather negative view of Congress and its recent failures to protect the people of the United States of America. The big question is: what is the best course of action in order to bring about the changes necessary to get our country on track?
