The Memorial

One of my Vietnam War tribute photos

Located in a secluded corner of the Thomasville rest stop on I-85 North and South is a piece of unique Tarheel beauty – the North Carolina Vietnam War Memorial.  This wonderfully landscaped treasure occupies approximately one square acre and features a brick wall onto which the names of 1,647 killed or missing servicemen and women have been etched.

As I walked along I found family names of which I am familiar, and it brought home the pain that war inevitably brings.  Many key military bases are located in North Carolina, and due to their nature our state is amongst the first to suffer when war is waged – we are not strangers to the price of conflict.

If you wish to thank the brave men and women of our state who paid the ultimate price in service of their country in Vietnam, be sure to to visit the Thomasville memorial when passing through North Carolina.  The rest stop at which it is located is near mile marker 100 off of I-85 between Greensboro and Charlotte.  It is approximately 30 miles south of Greensboro, and approximately 5 miles North of the Lexington exit.  Be sure to drive slowly – the entrance is easy to miss.  If you choose to see the memorial I’d love to hear your comments!
