Nikki on Romantic Lighting

Waiting for the right lighting to come outside and play!

Knowing that the vast majority of you who read my blog’s are male, I am guessing that your knowledge of lighting is basically limited to florescent and/or spot…maybe candle if you include the one that was atop your last birthday cake (which was lit by a lighter or a match, so I guess I can include those two as well).  I’m not condescending – just recognizing that most males are not as focused on romantic details as females.  Always remember that attention to the small things is critical when setting the proper mood for a date, and lighting is just as worthy of your time as is the food, wine, and music.

Lighting a candle is great, but pretty cliche.  Splurge a little and pick up some upright accent lights (e.g.:   http://www.walmart.com/ip/Grandrich-Up-Light-in-Black/11158014?findingMethod=rr) and place them in the corners of the room you plan to occupy.  Be sure to use nothing more than a soft white 25 watt bulb.  This will add a touch of class to the evening without screaming “I want to have sex!”

A nice adjustable floor lamp would also improve the overall romantic appeal of a given room – it will prevent that awkward full-on/full-off of a normal light switch.  Have the lamp dimly lit while you are out, and then turn it up a notch when you get home with your date.  The lack of harsh light will comfort her knowing that any wear on her makeup will not be revealed, yet enough will be cast to let her know there isn’t someone hiding in the shadows.

If all goes well, then it is finally time to consider lighting that candle!  Yay for you!!!  Pretty much any candle will do, but simple white, red, or yellow pillar candles are best as they cast a nice, soft, romantic glow and will not drip all over your furniture.  Be careful about scents – you don’t want to run the risk of picking the wrong one.  Vanilla is always the safest bet, but for the first event you might want to go with something with the least amount of scent.  After a successful evening you can always ask her for her opinion – or perhaps even invite her along to the Yankee Candle Company store to pick one out together!  If no scent is acceptable, there are also very well-made battery-operated options (e.g.:  http://www.target.com/Flameless-Melted-Edge-Candle-Set/dp/B001GDZ2R6/ref=sc_qi_detaillink).

I hope my advice will help you!  There are many other details to consider (such as plants, music, overall cleanliness of your home, etc) but will leave them for some other time.  I’ll be back with more to say pretty soon!

Thanks, Kurt! One of my favorite things to do is hang out on the balcony on a beautiful evening and watch the stars twinkle and listen to the wind blow through the leaves. I also love the breeze caress my bare legs, too!
